Planning your recovery: the week after surgery

The first 72 hours

Expect swelling, some discomfort, and limited mobility depending on the procedure. Most patients underestimate how tired they will feel. Plan for someone to drive you home and stay with you for the first night.

Days four through seven

Swelling peaks around day three or four, then starts to come down. Most patients can manage with over-the-counter pain relief by the end of the first week. We see you back in the office for a check-in around day seven.

Small choices that help a lot

Set up your recovery space before surgery, not after. Easy-to-reach water, phone charger, books, snacks. Loose, button-front clothing so you do not have to lift your arms over your head. A second pillow for elevation if your procedure called for it.

When to call us

Anything unusual: fever, sudden increase in pain, drainage that changes color or smell, asymmetric swelling. We would much rather hear about a non-issue than miss a real one.
